Astronaut Reveals Depression After Deluge of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also carried well-known figures.
The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a public message, describing a check-in call from a mission companion in the period after the journey.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her background – was overshadowed under the tide of misogyny.
She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the supporters whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.
She added that even with the backlash, important benefits had resulted from the flight, such as increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the edge of space.
The diverse crew also featured leaders in various fields.
The company behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company founded by a well-known tech mogul.
